Types of Wood Decking

DeckingWhen considering what type of decking materials you want for your new deck, you will need to think about a few factors:

  • Is it durable?
  • Will it still have structural integrity after decades of use?
  • Am I able to customize the colors?
  • Will it be damaged by weather or insects?

All of these are important questions to ask yourself before deciding on the type of wood for your deck.

One of the best types of wood you can buy is exotic hardwood. This type of wood is especially great for outdoor decks since they are durable, strong, insect and mold resistant and look beautiful.

Exotic hardwoods come in several different grain patterns and color choices. Since there are so many to choose from you can truly get the customized deck you’ve always wanted.

While hardwood is more expensive than other species, it is well worth the price. Exotic hardwoods can last up to 50 years and do well in all types of climate. Even though they are naturally resilient, it is still a good idea to seal your deck as an extra precaution. Also keep in mind that hardwoods tend to fade in the sun over time.

Some common types of hardwood include Yellow Balau Batu, Ipe, Red Meranti and Red Balau Batu. Each species has its own unique pattern and color palette. Ipe is one of the strongest hardwoods while Red Balau Batu is the most eye-catching. Red Meranti is high grade while Yellow Balau Batu changes color as it ages.

When considering which type of wood to use for your new outdoor deck, consider using exotic hardwood. Nothing else is as strong, durable or as beautiful as exotic hardwood. While you are spending a little more, you are getting more value in the long run.
